Protecting the environment is of great
concern to Charleston Gas Light, and
we are proud to be a leader in our industry with our
participation in the U.S. Green Building Council, which promotes energy
conservation,
recycling and reuse whenever possible.
Our lanterns
are handcrafted here in the
USA where we can closely maintain our high standard of craftsmanship
and materials, and all our scrap copper is collected
and recycled.
We encourage the use of gas safety igniters and photo
cell technology to conserve fuel in our gas
lanterns, and the use of CFLs (compact fluorescent lights) in our
electric lanterns to conserve
electricity. Our lanterns are shipped using recyclable corrugated
packaging.
We are also a member of the International Dark-Sky
Association, an organization dedicated to preserving the nighttime
environment through quality outdoor lighting. We will continue to
conserve our natural resources whenever possible and to be environmentally
responsible business owners.
Simple Ways to Go Greener
Here are a few EASY things we can each do to save our natural resources
and help protect our envronment.
- Turn off the water when brushing your teeth.
- Use eco-friendly cleaning products instead of harsh
chemical products.
- Replace your incandescent light bulbs with CFLs (compact
flourescent bulbs) – and recycle them when they finally expire
vs. putting them in the trash.
- Turn off lights when leaving a room.
- Participate in your community's recycling program and strive
to keep your "landfill" trash to a minimum.
- Opt for reusable fabric grocery bags to carry your groceries
home to reduce the need for plastic bags.
- Before you buy a product, think about how you will dispose of
its packaging. Choose products with recyclable packaging whenever
possible.
- Drink tap water (or filtered water) instead of buying bottled
water. If you DO buy bottled water, recycle all water bottles and
don't put them in the trash.
- Compost organic matter (if possible) and grow a garden of fresh
vegetables or herbs.
- Plant a tree.
